Marine Stereos FAQ
What is the difference between a marine stereo and a regular stereo?
The main differences between a marine stereo and a regular stereo are the way they are constructed and the environments they are meant to be used in. Regular stereos are intended for interior spaces such as homes and cars and are built with less durable materials that may leave them vulnerable to elements such as water and UV light.
Marine stereos are intended for outdoor environments where moisture is expected, such as boats and pontoons. These stereos are constructed using more durable materials that provide the stereo with higher resistance to outdoor elements such as water, UV light, and corrosion. Marine stereos are also often built with sealed components and conformal coated circuit boards, which add further resistance to water and corrosion.
Do I need a marine stereo for my boat?
A marine stereo is not strictly required for a boat, unless you want to be able to listen to music while out on the water. However, “marine stereo” may also refer to a 2-way VHF marine radio, which may be required depending on your situation or location.
It is recommended to have a 2-way VHF marine radio (especially if you are sailing in the ocean) even if you are not required to have one, as it can be used for emergency communication, weather updates, and communication with other boats.
Are marine stereos waterproof?
Most marine stereos are designed to be used in high moisture environments, and are therefore built to be waterproof or, at the very least, highly water resistant. Marine stereos are built with strong materials that can withstand repeated exposure to water, saltwater, humidity, and UV light. Marine stereos will also often feature UV-treated and corrosion-resistant materials as well as a fully sealed construction that further enhances their ability to withstand harsh outdoor elements.
