*ATTENTION – Our RecPro gas struts are primarily sold in sets. Manufacturers recommend that you replace both struts at the same time. Replacing only one gas strut can cause additional stress and wear on the remaining strut. This, in turn, can lead to damage or catastrophic failure. Ensure that you are observing safe work practices when installing replacement parts on your vehicle*
Important: Make sure that the gas strut already equipped on the vehicle and the gas strut you intend to use as a replacement are the same by comparing them together. Make sure that the part numbers on the gas struts match. Do not try to use the replacement gas strut if the part numbers do not match. Each gas strut is designed for a particular application and vehicle. It can be dangerous to use a gas strut for an application that it is not intended for. Doing so could potentially result in bodily injury or damage to the vehicle.
It is highly recommended that you have a friend or assistant to help you keep the liftgate, hood, trunk, or lid open while replacing the gas strut. If your application uses two gas struts, one strut will not have the strength to hold open the application. A person assisting you can help you avoid damage or bodily injury.
To remove the existing gas spring: Have another person hold open the lid, door, trunk, or other application. Using a small tool such as a flat screwdriver, slightly lift the retaining clip located on top of the ball socket. Afterward, pull the gas spring off the ball stud. Make sure the other person holds the hood or trunk open so that it will not fall and cause damage to the vehicle or individual. Repeat this step on the other end. Do not entirely remove the clip from the socket, as doing so could cause it to fly off and become lost or cause injury or damage. Only lift it enough to allow the socket to come off the ball stud.
