Description
In modern plumbing, PEX is one of the most common materials used. This high amount of usage is due to a few things. Before PEX, copper and galvanized steel systems were common. These systems weren't flexible, however, which led to plumbing systems that looked confusing and jumbled and had a high risk of leaks at every connection. PEX, on the other hand, is flexible enough to use one long length to go from the main water line to your faucet or fixture. This is called "homerun" plumbing. It's better for ensuring that there are no risks of leaking at a bunch of connection sites. PEX also expands, which unlike copper or steel, makes it more resistant to cracking when in freezing temperatures. It also doesn't corrode, which can happen to both copper and steel pipes after a while. This keeps the leaks away and the water clean. In addition to these things, have you ever noticed the racket that can happen when water goes through the copper or steel pipes? With PEX tubing, you can eliminate that sound and replace it with silent water flow.
PEX is also easy to use and identify later. The color-coded hoses make it easy to know which one is hot and which one is cold (blue is cold, red is hot). You don't have to use soldering to install PEX either and it can be connected to existing water lines as well with the correct fittings. With PEX, you can use either copper crimp rings or compression fittings. Between the two, compression fittings are easier to work with, as you don't need an extra tool. Some tips for the best results are: to use only the recommended tools, to store the tubing indoors and out of the sun, and to use a PEX cutter to make clean cuts that will make it easier to work with.
