When you’re on the road and out hiking or at the lake, there’s nothing better than a nice hot shower to soothe the aches and clean the grime of the day away. But if your factory supplied water heater just isn’t maintaining enough hot water for you, those showers can leave you shivering and sore. But finding the right water heater can be difficult, leaving you wondering if you’re buying a reliable water heater. RecPro has you covered with this Suburban water heater.
You’ll know you’re getting a trusted Suburban product when you receive a factory sealed box containing your new water heater. Suburban is a high quality and trusted brand in the RV water heater market. This particular Suburban water heater is model SW6DE. It is a gas and electric water heater. It is designed to be hard wired into your RV so no need to stress about finding an outlet for it.
Model SW6DE
Let’s break down what the model name means. SW simply is showing that this water heater is a Suburban branded water heater. The 6 tells you the gallon capacity of the tank. This model’s capacity is 6 gallons. The D is for the Direct Spark Ignition that the gas heating system uses to heat your water. A direct spark ignition system removes the need for a pilot light by creating a spark when turned on that immediately ignites the gas in the system. The spark is created through a 12 volt DC hookup. E is for the electric heating element in this unit. This unit uses a 120 volt AC hookup.
This water heater measures 12.7”H x 12.7”W x 19.2”D and requires a cutout of roughly 12.75”H x 12.75”W x 19.2”D. It is not advised to be installed forward facing or on forward angled walls, side walls are the best placement for this unit. It also shouldn’t be installed below slideouts as it can interfere with proper venting. When installed near doors or windows that can swing open, use caution leaving them open as they can block the vent and cause dangerous gasses to build up.
Safety Features
This heater comes with plenty of safety features to keep it running for a long time and to keep you safe. First, this heater is CSA certified for safety. This tank is also pressure tested twice during manufacturing to ensure its integrity, so you know that you’re getting a tank that will last. The tank of this heater comes insulated, which not only helps the tank water retain its heat, but prevents that heat from seeping out into the areas surrounding the tank. So you don’t need to worry about heat ruining anything near your water heater tank. The tank also features temperature monitoring. It is set to heat and maintain the water in the tank to 135°F (57°C). This temperature is non adjustable, so be sure to use caution when using the hot water as temperatures above 125°F can cause scalding and burns. Always test water before using.
Another safety feature of this water heater is that it comes with a pressure relief valve. The pressure relief valve is there to keep the temperature and pressure inside the tank within safe levels. If your tank is dripping from the valve, don’t immediately panic, the valve may just be doing its job. The valve will open to allow a small stream or drip to regulate the interior of the system. It opens if either the temperature of the water reaches 210°F or 150 pounds of pressure has built in the tank. Once the temperature or pressure have gone down, the valve will close again. This tank also comes equipped with a replaceable anode rod. This rod attracts sediment and corrosive elements in your water that could possibly corrode your tank. So the rod is corroded in place of your tank, and because the rod is replaceable, it’ll keep your tank working great for longer. Note that failure to properly maintain your water heater can lead to a voided warranty.
This unit is little but carries some weight to it. It has a dry weight of 38 pounds, making it easy to install. Its weight with a full gallon tank is approximately 83 pounds. The tank itself is made of steel and is lined with porcelain which makes it safe to drink (as long as the water supply coming in is safe). The hot water outlet and cold water inlet also feature plastic tubes on the fittings that enhance water circulation.
The technical requirements for this water heater and 12V DC and 120V AC for the heating elements. It has 1440 watt consumption. Its BTU level is 12K. The recovery rate for the tank on electric is 6.1 gallons per hour. And the recovery rate for the tank on gas is 10.1 gallons per hour.
This unit does not come with mounting hardware. It is just the water heater and tank. You have the option to bundle the tank with a flush mount door and interior control switch. Both items come in black and white and you are about to mix and match to best fit your interior and exterior decor. This tank also comes with a manufacturer’s warranty.
